Shadow Gap Strip
Frames with a shadow gap strip, also called a Guggenheim strip, differ significantly from the well-known decorated frame strips. For while a normal decorated frame lies on top of the painting, a decorated frame with a shadow gap strip, the painting stretched on a wedge frame, is laid in the corner of the shadow gap strip and screwed together from behind. A 1 cm black gap is left between the painting and the frame – the shadow gap. In this way, the painting acquires a three dimensional effect and thereby achieves a special emphasis. Shadow gap strips do not permit of a passe-partout framing.
The Bauhaus, Dessau and Weimar strips are shadow gap strips.

Wedge Frame
The wedge frame, also called the stretcher frame, is for fixing the canvas. With the moveable wedges in the corners of the frame the organic cotton fabric of the artist’s canvas can always be kept at an optimal tension. The stretched-out painting is fixed with the wedge frame behind a decorated frame. When using a decorated frame with a shadow gap strip, also called a Guggenheim strip, the wedge frame lies on the shadow gap strip from the front and gives the painting an extraordinary three dimensional effect.
