Der 1855 in den Niederlanden geborene Künstler, dessen Gemälde heute zu den teuersten der Welt zählen, lebte zeit seines Lebens unter einfachsten Verhältnissen und war auf die finanzielle Unterstützung seines Bruders angewiesen. Der Mythos um den 1890 mit 37 Jahren durch Suizid verstorbenen Vincent van Gogh - das unverstandene Genie, der Nervenkranke, der sich in seinem Wahnsinn selbst verstümmelte - stand lange Zeit im Vordergrund der Beurteilung seines Oeuvres. Einige Umwege über den Beruf des Kunsthändlers zu dem des Missionars führten van Gogh schließlich zur künstlerischen Ausbildung nach Paris. Lange suchte er nach eigenen Ausdrucksformen: Er experimentierte mit impressionistischen Techniken und ließ sich von japanischen Holzschnitten inspirieren. Stark geprägt von Millets Landarbeitern und von EugÃ¨ne Delacroix Farbkontrasten entwickelte er seinen eigenen Stil, in dem die expressive Behandlung von Farbe und Form im Vordergrund steht. Dies zeigen insbesondere seine späten Werken, wie "Die Zypressen", in denen eine fließende Pinselführung dominiert.
